Sunjay Brayne + Between The Lines share this Concert

Sunjay Brayne

BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Nominee, Winner of the Wath Festival Young Performers Award & New Roots Competition Finalist (2012) Sunjay’s accolades are formidable for somebody who turned 20 just a few months ago.

A captivating young performer; Sunjay is an extremely talented blues, folk singer/songwriter and guitarist. Reminiscent of Ralph McTell, John Martyn and Jackson C. Frank, Sunjay’s performances have been described as “mature & confident”, while his guitar playing has been hailed as “superb, brilliant, experienced, intricate & faultless”.

Born to Anglo-Indian parents, Sunjay was born in Derby and raised in the West Midlands were he began playing the guitar at the age of 4. His dad introduced him to a broad spectrum of music in the hope that he would develop a life-long passion. Sunjay’s first musical love was Buddy Holly, closely followed by Don McLean, firmly rooting him with a blues and folk mix.

He has now developed these influences, into a musical maturity far beyond his years. In late 2013, after the release of his first live album ‘One Night Only’ Sunjay was asked to support Steeleye Span on several of their ‘Wintersmith’ tour dates. Other artist’s Sunjay has supported include the likes of Martin Simpson, Passenger, Phil Beer, Steve Tilston and Terry Reid, to name a few.

Sunjay is busy, in 2014 he’ll be playing over 100 gigs and is currently working on a new album for an Autumn release, with a major 40 date headline tour to promote the album.

From national radio play to main stage festival appearances Sunjay is a major young talent, remaining true to his musical roots, at the same time creating a unique path; his is ‘new generation’ blues-folk.

Between The Lines

Left to right

John Blanks Vocals, guitar and mandolin

Phil Biggs Vocals, guitar and mandola (and occasional flute)

Mark Addison Vocals, bass and mandolin

A big welcome back to Between The Lines, who are a favourite at Faldingworth Live.

They formed around 2006, while, Phil and Mark, as now, were playing together in “Akmeds Camel”, the South-Lincolnshire ceilidh band. They had decided to form a duo outside the band, mainly to play local folk clubs, and thereafter “to see how far we could get”.

Meantime, Mark had written the song “The Fallen of Fulstow” with John Blanks, following an introduction in John’s home town of Gainsborough. John was, and remains, a much respected solo singer and guitarist. He sang the song as an entry in the “Write a Lincolnshire Folk Song” competition. Mark had past form, having in the past written winning entries for Katie Abbott and The Old Parrot Band. The song had the good fortune to win the competition, and has since taken the ear of Vin Garbutt, who has included it on his new CD out this year. (Fingers crossed!)

Phil and Mark had another chance meeting with John at a booking at Belton House.  From thereon, the formation of a trio was obvious. Originally going under the name of “Better Late than Naked”, purloined from the title of one of John’s solo CD’s, they changed their name a couple of years ago, while John took a short break from the band, and Phil and Mark continued as a duo. When John returned, they kept the name, Between the Lines.

Phil’s own songs, which he also performs solo, have received wide recognition, and have been requested for use by some well known artists on the folk scene. Many are tinged with his fondness of Irish music, while telling stories of Lincolnshire and well beyond.

Mark usually turns to John or Phil to provide the music for his lyrics, which are more often than not based around local stories and legend, and regularly reflect Lincolnshire’s military and aviation heritage. John contributes his own fine lead vocals and harmonies, bringing songs from his own favourite writers such as Stan Rogers into the repertoire.

Trio Threlfall in Concert

Trio Threlfall

Roger Edwards Vocals, Anglo Concertina and Guitar

Amanda Threlfall Vocals, Violin and Viola

Jane Threlfall Vocals, Guitar, Mandola and Mandolin

Faldingworth Live are so pleased to welcome back Trio Threlfall. Such a brilliant trio and loved by the Faldingworth Live audience. Get your tickets reserved early, to avoid disapointment

JANE & AMANDA THRELFALL, working with musician ROGER EDWARDS, are universally acknowledged as natural ambassadors for English traditional song.

Their approach is endearingly self-effacing and commentators highlight the sisters' consummate ability to reinterpret songs from the English lexicon with freshness and vitality.

As testament to the effectiveness of their interaction with audiences they have been described thus: 'While many of their firmly traditional English songs tell sad and melancholy stories, they are such warm and engaging performers that the overall sensation is simply uplifting'.

Their easy and relaxed style belies the enormous respect they share for the traditional material which makes up their repertoire and it's only through the level and quality of their performance that it suddenly becomes wonderfully apparent.

Support Stitherum

Mike and Sue Dewsbury are a very popular duo who are welcomed back to Faldingworth Live.

Their musical influences are wide with Mike having a deep affection for the early blues and the playing of John Hurt, Blind Boy Fuller and of course Robert Johnson. Sue, however prefers a much more ‘melodic’ style and particularly enjoys the singing of June Tabor, Artisan, Tom Bliss and Bob Fox.

They are regularly asked to provide the support act for local performances by artists as diverse as Bert Jansch, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan, Emily Druce, Jez Lowe and Bob Fox.

Megson in Concert

STU HANNA & DEBBIE HANNA are the husband & wife duo MEGSON.

Three times nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and double winners of the 2011 Spiral Earth Awards they draw heavily on their Teesside heritage to create a unique brand of folk music.

Their infectious sound is a mix of heavenly vocals, lush harmonies and driving rhythmic guitars and mandolas.

As FROOTS Magazine puts it ‘if you don’t like the music here then you have a problem’

In the ten years since MEGSON began, the duo have played up and down the country, gaining a devoted fanbase and selling out many of their extensive tour dates.

Their growing talent was recognised not only with 3 nominations for BEST DUO in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2009 – 2011 but also with burgeoning interest from the major broadsheets.

Their last album ‘THE LONGSHOT’ had rave reviews from the national press with 4 Star **** reviews from MOJO, THE FINANCIAL TIMES, UNCUT, THE SUNDAY EXPRESS and THE GUARDIAN ‘the most original duo on the folk scene’. THE GUARDIAN ran a major feature on them and THE INDEPENDENT has listed MEGSON in their TOP GIGS TO SEE section on numerous occasions.

In 2011 MEGSON took a break from music as they welcomed their little girl Lola Wren into the world.

Unable to stay away too long they looked for a project that would combine their new roles as parents with their musical passions. ‘WHEN I WAS A LAD’ was the end result, an album of old and new children’s folk songs to be released in September 2012.

Stu has also kept himself busy over this period, producing albums for THE CECIL SHARP PROJECT, the award winning album by LUCY WARD and a forthcoming release on Navigator Records for THE YOUNG’UNS.
